The 2008 foaling season is just around the corner and we at Palmer Quarter Horses are excited. With the above average snowpack this year, we are hoping for a green, lush summer!

We are excited to announce that we will be offering a Kid's Camp this summer.

The dates of the camp are June 9-13 from 9 am to 3 pm. We have horses available if you do not have your own horse.

Teaching the proper way and most importantly, the safest way to work with horses is the goal of the week. We will teach you about caring for a horse including grooming and feeding. You will learn about groundwork and how to gain respect from your horse. Proper saddling and tack care will be presented. You will be riding both in the arena and on our trails. There will be many horse activities throughout the week in addition to other fun things to do.

Lunch and snacks are included for the week.

On the last day of the camp, your parents are encouraged to come and watch as we have a horse show for the participants.

The camp will be conducted by the following people:

Randy Palmer has been guiding and teaching people about horses for the past 12 years. He has ridden with and learned from some of the best in the world including Leroy Webb, one of the most respected and talented old time cowboys as featured in the biographical book 'The Last Cowboy' by Davis L. Ford. When he was in high school he tutored under rodeo legend Marvin Cantrell. More recently he has had the opportunity to ride and work with one of the best teachers ever, Craig Cameron. He is also lucky enough to have the opportunity to ride with the icon of the modern horse clinician movement, Ray Hunt.

Stefanie Johnson has ridden all of her life, showing both English and Western. She taught riding with Over the Hill Outfitters with her favorite part of leading trail rides being to take out all the kids.

Cindy Looman grew up riding horses on the Palmer Quarter Horse Ranch going to the National High School Finals Rodeo for two years in a row in cutting. She also roped and goat tied. She spent four years teaching on the Navajo Indian Reservation. Her family consisting of a set of twin girls and a boy took her time away from horses and she spent her time teaching, had her own child day care business, and is now teaching at the local Catholic school, St Columba.

Dixie Palmer is our counselor having been a teachers aid for AD children at Needham Elementary in Durango for 15 years before she retired in 2006.

Cost for the camp is $700 if you use one of our horses, $500 if you use your own horse. We have boarding available if you choose to use your own horse for $15/day or $60 for the entire camp.

The Camp is limited to 10 participants.

Feel free to email or call our office if you have any questions or would like to register for the camp.

Once again, our Backcountry Horsemanship Clinics featuring Craig Cameron were one of the highlights of our summer. We had participants from California, Maine, Mexico and everywhere between. Craig’s incredible personality and ability to teach, combined with our unique wilderness setting, sets this ‘clinic’ apart from anything in the world. It truly is something that you must join to understand what it’s all about.
