PERFORMANCE

This is what we breed our Quarter Horses for. Our goal is to produce the best all around, performing horse you can have. We are a small, family run business dedicated to horses. We are father and son, Terry Palmer and Randy Palmer. Our base of operation is the Palmer Quarter Horse Ranch on the Florida River which has been in our family for over 40 years. Three generations of Palmers work together to keep the herd of over 100 horses thriving. We pride ourselves on having the finest horses anywhere. What this means to you is an equine experience that is unequaled in both reliability and pleasure, and one that you will never forget.

About the Palmers and the History of Palmer Quarter Horses...

Terry Palmer
Terry Palmer, co-owner of Over the Hill Outfitters

Terry Palmer has been involved with horses since he was a kid. He moved onto the Palmer Quarter Horse Ranch when he was 16 and has been there ever since. His first horseback adventures took place about this time when he made his first trip to the City Reservoir, the same area that Over the Hill Outfitters trips take place now. His fish stories of catching 150 trout on a bare hook while lying in his sleeping bag next to the lake originate here. Hunting also brought him into the woods every fall in search of wapiti. He has made his entire life center around horses culminating in the raising of Quarter Horses and boarding horses on the Ranch. He is actively involved in the community being a board member of the Florida Water Conservation District and the Four Corners Cutting and Reining Association

Randy Palmer was born in Durango also growing up around horses. The trail that Over the Hill Outfitters uses today is the same one that Terry took the family on to City Reservoir when Randy was six years old. His first 'solo' pack trip into the Weminuche took place while he was a sophomore at Durango Senior High School. He was active in rodeo, roping calves and team roping and went to the National High School Rodeo Association Finals in 1980 and 1981 in cutting. His 21st birthday was spent at hunting camp up East Creek. He also was a member of the Colorado State University rodeo team from 1981-1983. His undergraduate college education was culminated with a BS in Physics from Fort Lewis College in Durango which led to employment at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico where he did his best to keep track of nuclear material to help stop the proliferation of nuclear weapons around the world. From there he went to graduate school at the University of Oregon at Eugene. Here, his interest in the mountains led him to studying earthquakes and the history of the Western United States leading to a Ph.D. in Geophysics. He couldn't shake his desire to be out in the wilderness and hired on at Bear Basin Ranch in Westcliffe, CO, where he guided pack trips, mountain biking, taught climbing, and guided climbs on the Crestone Needle, a prized Colorado Fourteener. He guided elk hunts in the Sangre de Cristos anddeer hunts in the Wet Mountains. Finally, after running the outfitting business for nine years, he is making time to once again train some of the reining, roping and cutting bred quarter horses that are bred and raised on the Palmer Quarter Horse Ranch.

Horse Boarding...

The Palmer Quarter Horse Ranch is a full service boarding facility. If you wish to board your horse at a world class facility while still enjoying the rustic nature of Durango, check us out.

The hub of operations is the indoor arena (54'X96'), providing a place to ride when the weather is not cooperating in the winter (not very often this winter!) and a cool place to work in the heat of the summer. Six 12'X12' indoor stalls adjoin the arena along with a secure tack room. Six covered stalls with runs are located in the south facing Outback Barn. A full size outdoor arena complete with roping chutes provides plenty of room to train your horse. A walker is available for cooling off. Two round pens are attached to the outdoor arena.

We also offer overnight boarding for travelers, or those choosing to stay in Durango with their horses to ride the amazing variety of trails in the Weminuche Wilderness, the San Juan National Forest and the surrounding Bureau of Land Management Lands surrounding the Durango Area.

Please call the ranch for availabilty: (970) 247-1694.

Trail Riding...

Horseback Riding on the Palmer Ranch

There are over 20 miles of trails to ride on the 1200 acre Palmer Quarter Horse Ranch, and we are constantly working to develop more. We offer trail rides through our outfitting business, Over the Hill Outfitters. The trail network offers a diversity of spectacular scenery and obstacles for novice and advanced riders and horse boarders can ride right from the barn.
